Review: Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies

Degree Offered: Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies (Intercultural Ministry, Children and Youth at Risk); Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies/Master of Arts in Counseling Dual Track Format: Campus, Online
Program Description: The M.A. in Intercultural Studies is for students seeking specialized, graduate, theological education in the area of cross cultural ministry. It is designed to prepare students for effective intercultural ministry in the U.S. and abroad. It provides adequate preparation for service as a bi-vocational or professional worker within an intercultural context. It also serves as an excellent degree program for those who want to expand their knowledge and skills of intercultural issues. Accreditation: Western Seminary is accredited to award master’s and doctor’s degrees by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and is an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada. Eligibility Requirements: A recommendation from the applicant’s pastor and three personal recommendations regarding the applicant’s Christian character and leadership potential are required, in addition to the master's level application and transcripts. Applicants, for whom English is not their first language, are required to demonstrate evidence of mastery of the English language for graduate study. The standard for this is through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For admission to an M.A. program, the seminary requires a minimum score of 20 on each of the four section tests of the TOEFL-iBT. International Student Requirements: Prior to applying to Western Seminary, international students must complete a Pre-Application that can be requested from the Admissions Department. If an international student is encouraged to apply to Western Seminary, he or she is required to provide a financial guarantee that will cover his or her study and living expenses for one year. It is expected that, barring unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding will be available from the same or equally dependable sources for subsequent years. The financial guarantee must include living expenses for any dependents as well. The guarantee must indicate the individual(s) or organization(s) that will actually provide the funds for study and living expenses.
